Saskatchewan′s new immigration strategy, ″Strengthening our Communities and Economy″
The Saskatchewan′s Provincial Nomination Program and the immigrant settlement services are helping to build its reputation as an immigration destination in Canada. The government of Saskatchewan has introduced a new immigration strategy which will be implemented in stages. The province is investing an additional $2.69 million for immigration and the focus will be:
- Enhance settlement and integration support for newcomers;
- Attract entrepreneur immigrants and skilled workers to support the economy,create jobs, and to address labour market gaps
In 2008-2009, the labour market nominations in the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program(SINP) increased by 72 % to 2,914 workers – including family members which equates to approximately 7,800 people. The processing time was reduced by 24 % while the number of applications received grew by 53%.
The SINP Program is planning to nominate 3,400 immigrants in 2009-10, which would result in nearly 10,000 newcomers to Saskatchewan. They are also simplifying their categories to be more understandable to employers and applicants. International student category would definitely benefit the foreign students studying in Saskatchewan. SINP is developing a fairer, predictable, and transparent application review process and processing priorities, and also working on developing formal partnerships with specific countries.
